So you've finally decided to do it. Maybe you've been saving a screenshot for three years, or maybe you walked past a tattoo shop last weekend and something clicked. Either way, you're here, and you're a little nervous. Good. That means it matters to you.
We get a lot of first-timers through our doors here in Northeast Portland, and the questions are almost always the same. So instead of answering them one anxious email at a time, we figured we'd put it all in one place. Here's what we actually tell people before their first appointment.
Portland has no shortage of talent. There are incredible artists scattered across the whole city, from the east side to downtown, and that's genuinely a good problem to have. But it also means the most important decision you'll make isn't where to get tattooed. It's who tattoos you.
Every artist has a style. Some live and breathe black and grey realism. Some do bold, saturated color. Some are all fine-line, some are all big bold statements. Before you book anything, spend an evening going through portfolios. Look at healed work if you can find it, not just the fresh-off-the-needle photos. A piece that looks crisp the day it's done but blurs in two years tells you something.
When you find an artist whose existing work already looks like the thing in your head, you're most of the way there. That's the whole game. A good Portland tattoo artist will be honest with you if your idea isn't in their wheelhouse, and they'll usually point you toward someone who's a better fit. We do that all the time.
A lot of the better tattoo shops in Portland, ours included, work by appointment only. If you've only ever pictured walking into a tattoo parlor and pointing at something on the wall, this can feel like a lot. It isn't. It just means your artist has set aside time specifically for you, and that they've thought about your piece before you ever sit down.
It also means no rushing. Your session is yours. Nobody's tapping their foot waiting for the chair.
This is the part people underestimate. A consultation isn't a sales pitch. It's a conversation. You bring your reference photos, your half-formed idea, the song lyric you're maybe-maybe-not committed to, and we figure out together how to make it work on a human body that bends and stretches and is covered in skin, not flat paper.
Don't show up with a fully locked-in plan and expect to defend it. Show up curious. The best tattoos almost always come out of that back-and-forth. You know what you love; we know what holds up over decades on an arm. Meet in the middle and you'll end up with something better than either of us would've landed on alone.
Real talk, the prep is simple but it matters more than you'd think:
We're not going to lie to you. It's a needle. But most people are genuinely surprised by how manageable it is, especially in fleshier spots like the outer arm or thigh. Ribs, feet, and the inside of the elbow are spicier. Your artist will tell you what to expect for your specific placement, and you can always tap out for a breather. There are no medals for sitting through pain in silence.
Your tattoo isn't really done when you leave the studio. The next two weeks are on you. Keep it clean, don't drown it in ointment, don't pick at the flakes no matter how badly you want to, and stay out of pools, hot tubs, and direct Oregon-summer sun while it heals. We send everyone home with clear aftercare instructions, and we mean it when we say to text us if anything looks off. We'd much rather answer a "is this normal?" question than have you guess.
If you want the full rundown, we keep a detailed tattoo aftercare guide on our site that walks through every stage.
Good tattoos aren't cheap, and cheap tattoos often aren't good. Most Portland tattoo artists charge either by the hour or a flat rate for a piece, and a quality custom tattoo is genuinely an investment. Tipping is customary and always appreciated, the same way you'd tip anyone whose skilled work you're walking away thrilled with. If you're budgeting, talk to your artist openly. We can often plan a larger piece across sessions so it fits your timeline and your wallet.
We've been tattooing folks in NE Portland since 2019, and our whole thing is making the experience feel calm and friendly instead of intimidating. Plants, good music, zero attitude. Everyone is welcome in our chair.
If you're ready to start, take a look at our artists' portfolios and reach out through our contact page to set up a consultation. And if you just want to get a feel for the kind of work we do, our Instagram @silentearthstudios is the easiest place to scroll through it. Your first tattoo should be something you're proud of for a long time. Let's make it count.
